Abstract: 

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether different REFLECTIVE teaching TOOLS obtained the same kind of data. If not, which tool provided the REFLECTIVE teachers with more reliable data? In order to investigate the research question, a researcher-made questionnaire related to the teachers’ decision making was designed. The population of the study consisted of all the Teachers (i.e., around 60 teachers) and students (i.e., around 2500 students) in the English Department of Islamic Azad University, Roudehen Branch in the academic year of 2006-2007. The method of selecting the research sample was simple random sampling. The research sample was comprised of 10 teachers and 251 students. The design of the study was descriptive (non-experimental correlational). The statistical analysis of data included the application of ANOVA and Pearson Coefficient of Correlation. The ANOVA test showed that the F observed (8.12) was significant at the 0.05 level; therefore, there were significant differences among the kind of data that different REFLECTIVE TOOLS obtained. Moreover, further analysis emphasized that some REFLECTIVE teaching TOOLS provided the teachers with more reliable data.

REFLECTIVE TEACHING IS A PARADIGM THAT GIVES TEACHERS THE ABILITY TO TEACH UNIVERSALLY IN A PROFESSIONAL WAY BY DEVELOPING THEIR TEACHING PROGRESS IN ORDER TO IMPROVE THEIR EFFICIENCY. TO DO SO, A VARIETY OF METHODS HAVE BEEN INTRODUCED AND USED FOR MANY YEARS, ESPECIALLY DURING THE RECENT DECADES AMONG WHICH WE CAN INTRODUCE TEACHERS’ DIARY AND PEER OBSERVATION AS TWO MAIN TOOLS USED FOR THIS PURPOSE. THESE TWO ARE STRONGLY RECOMMENDED BY A LOT OF PROFESSIONAL (ROSE, 2007; MURPHY, 2001; TICE, 2002). IN THIS ARTICLE, WE ARE BROADENING OUR INVESTIGATION AND REVIEWING PREVIOUSLY RECOMMENDED TOOLS IN ORDER TO EVALUATE WHICH TOOLS CAN HAVE MORE EFFICIENCY IN THIS METHOD OF TEACHING. FURTHER INVESTIGATIONS AND STUDIES CAN HELP PROFESSIONALS OF THIS METHOD TO MAKE A GREAT IMPROVEMENT IN THE WORLD OF EDUCATION.

Abstract: 

The aim of this study was to determine if there exist different in various REFLECTIVE Teaching Instruments in the context of Iranian English Language Education or not and to identify which tool yielded more dependable data for REFLECTIVE teachers. To address this research question, a researcher-made questionnaire related to teachers' decision-making processes was developed. The study population consisted of teachers (approximately 60) and 250 students in the Navid English Institute and Shiraz Azad University in Shiraz. Simple random sampling was used to select a research sample consisting of 10 teachers and 75 students. The study followed a descriptive, non-experimental correlational design. Statistical analysis involved the use of ANOVA and Pearson's Coefficient of Correlation. The ANOVA results indicated that the observed F-value (7. 92) was statistically significant at the 0. 05 level, signifying significant differences in the data obtained by different REFLECTIVE TOOLS. Furthermore, subsequent analysis revealed that certain REFLECTIVE teaching TOOLS yielded more reliable data for teachers.

Abstract: 

REFLECTIVE practice, in the shape of post-teaching self-evaluations, is a core element of many pre-service English as a Second Language (ESL) teacher training programmes such as CELTA. Most research on REFLECTIVE practice has been carried out with pre-service teachers, but more evidence is needed to understand the REFLECTIVE practice of in-service ESL teachers. This study employed a Corpus-Linguistics tool called LancsBox to analyse the nature of REFLECTIVE discourse found in 44 post-teaching self-evaluations, written by in-service L1-English ESL teachers, in a language school in Colombia. Corpus Linguistics techniques included frequency lists, keywords, ngrams, and concordances. Results suggest that in-service teachers tend to reflect upon the area of Subject Knowledge the most. Other frequent areas of reflection include Lesson Planning and Classroom Management. Areas such as Understanding Learners and Use of Learning Technologies seem far less important. Generally, the most salient REFLECTIVE discourse type they produce is Factual, followed by Prudential and Evaluative discourse. The pedagogical implications of this study are threefold. First, both pre-service and in-service ESL teachers need to be taught how to reflect and this needs to be supported by teacher trainers. Second, to guide overall REFLECTIVE practices, TOOLS employed by pre- and in-service ESL teachers to reflect on their lessons could be adapted, so they mirror specific areas of reflection such as the teaching skills and REFLECTIVE discourse types being evaluated. Third, the current study suggests a self-reflection tool pre- and in-service ESL teachers can use to assess and reflect on their own teaching practices.
